Support for Veterinarians to Develop Research Careers Closing date 07 February 2011
The Roslin Institute is a BBSRC Institute incorporated with the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. We aim to enhance the lives of animals and humans through world class research in animal biology. The Institute already has close research connections with researchers at the R(D)SVS and other vet schools and we place high value on these interactions with clinical colleagues.
If you are a veterinarian who would like to undertake postgraduate or postdoctoral study at The Roslin Institute we encourage you to have a look at the current funding opportunities offered by the Wellcome Trust.
The Wellcome Trust, in association with the UK Veterinary Schools, offers three types of fellowship aimed at encouraging veterinarians to consider and develop a career combining both laboratory-based research and clinical practice:
• Veterinary Research Entry Fellowships:
Provide support for veterinary graduates who wish to undertake research leading to a Master’s degree.
Candidates should have an intercalated degree and/or a demonstrable interest in research. Applications are also welcome from candidates who have had a career break and now wish to acquire research experience. The closing date for applications is 7 February 2011.
• Integrated Training Fellowships for Veterinarians:
Provide support for veterinary graduates who wish to develop a career in biomedical research by obtaining a laboratory-based PhD and clinical training. Candidates should have an intercalated degree and/or a demonstrable interest in research. The closing date for preliminary applications is 12 November 2010.
• Veterinary Postdoctoral Fellowships:
Provide support for veterinary postdoctoral researchers to develop their independence by undertaking high-quality laboratory research, sponsored by a UK Veterinary School. The closing date for preliminary applications is 12 November 2010.
The Trust and the UK Veterinary Schools wish to foster collaborations across the biomedical sciences and, therefore, particularly encourage applications where research projects are based in, or involve a collaboration with, a team carrying out basic research. Please visit www.liv.ac.uk/wellcomevets for further information about the Schools and potential research projects.
For more information on the fellowships, please visit www.wellcome.ac.uk/vets or email vets@wellcome.ac.uk.

If you would like to work with The Roslin Institute’s world leading scientists, please email your current CV along with a brief outline of your future research plans to Professor David Hume (david.hume@roslin.ed.ac.uk).
David Phillips Fellowships
These prestigious fellowships aim to support outstanding early-career scientists who wish to establish themselves as independent researchers. Up to 10 fellowships are available for scientists who at 1 October 2010 must not exceed ten years in total spent in active postgraduate research studies and postdoctoral research employment.
Institute Career Path Fellowships Up to 2 fellowships are available to support early-career researchers wishing to be based at any BBSRC Institute. The applicant’s research programme should address the area of “food security”. Eligibility for candidates is the same as for the David Phillips Fellowship scheme.
Research Development Fellowships
These fellowships aim to support scientists wishing to undertake new directions in their research. Applicants seeking to develop interdisciplinary dimensions by integrating new techniques or methodologies into their research are particularly encouraged.
Industrial Impact Fellowships
Up to 5 fellowships are available for highly skilled research and technology leaders with a PhD (or equivalent professional experience) to transfer their skills and experience to BBSRC-funded centres, institutes and academic departments.
