Postgraduate Opportunities
The Roslin Institute offers a high quality training environment and a high standard of facilities and expertise to our students. We believe graduate students contribute a vital part of a lively and forward-looking research institute and presently we have 50 PhD students based at Roslin Institute. Students will join an outward looking organization with an established reputation for the quality of its science, strong links with industry and a high public profile.
At present our studentships are sponsored by UK Research Councils (BBSRC and MRC) and Industry and we are part of the BBSRC Doctoral training Account scheme which offers 4-year standard and CASE studentships. Further information on funding is available on the University of Edinburgh Scholarships and Student Finances web site.
All students will be registered at the School of Veterinary Studies (R(D)SVS), University of Edinburgh. Within the Institute, individual students are integrated within their supervisor’s group and department, and participate fully in journal clubs, group meetings and departmental seminar programmes. Most students join groups with at least one experienced technician and two or three post-doctoral scientists and therefore have ready access to practical expertise. Supervisors are full time researchers and students therefore have ready access to their supervisors on a day-to-day basis. The student is expected to complete a piece of original research, directed towards solving important, novel and open questions.
Students have opportunities to travel to UK and International conferences to make presentations to peers and colleagues. Training in generic skills is offered through the Institute’s Training Officer via the BBSRC and the transferable skills programme at the University of Edinburgh. All students Benefit from IT and statistical support, and design and print expertise.
Strict eligibility criteria are enforced. Recruitment, monitoring, training and pastoral care are overseen by a Postgraduate Student Coordinator, Dr Colin Farquharson, who also chairs a Postgraduate Students Committee with both staff and student representatives.
The British Council offers advice on studying in the UK and their offices around the world.
